American Crow

CrowRecognition

Everyone can identify a crow. Black overall, smaller than a raven, with a shorter less powerful bill. The caw call is not as hoarse as that of the Raven.

Haunts

Needs a mixed habitat of open space and woodlands. It is often seen along the valley bottom and on farmer’s fields.

Schedule

Spring migration begins in early March and most are gone by mid October. In the summer at sunset watch for large flocks of crows heading for their evening roosts.

Field Notes

Personal anecdotes from crow observers abound with the feats of crows. Someone once saw a crow pull the pin from a kennel door to let the dog out, then hop in and eat the dog’s food. Another person watched a crow hop along a clothesline plucking off clothespins and watch each piece of wet laundry plop to the ground. The bird’s purpose? Its own sheer amusement, I guess.
