In 1992, a flat lander Texan moved to Spillimacheen, not knowing the difference between a wetland and a swamp. Over the following almost 30 years, the land, the river the animals and local folks who appreciate nature offered an ongoing education which brought not only an appreciation for the Columbia River and the surrounding wetlands but a sense of belonging to the landscape and the knowledge that whatever happens in the rest of the world, the river keeps flowing, the birds keep singing and the universe is unfolding as it should.
